Tower of Herod the Great

Herod the Great constructed palaces for himself all over the country including at Masada, Jericho, Herodium, Caesarea and Jerusalem. The most lavish was reportedly at Jerusalem but almost nothing of this palace on the Western Hill remains today. The palace was protected by three towers that Herod built to the north. This tower was called either Phasael or Hippicus by Herod (scholars disagree) and the massive Herodian stones are visible in the lower section.
