Mt. Zion from the south
Today Mt. Zion conspicuously rests outside the walls of the Old City. Through most of the biblical period this hill was well inside the city's walled perimeter, but it was not known as Mt. Zion. The misnomer was applied by Byzantine pilgrims who mistook this higher and more expansive Western Hill for the most ancient part of the city. In fact, the Mt. Zion referred to in Scripture is always the Eastern Hill where the Temple Mount is.
